Native accounts, app portals, or custom? Trade-offs, use cases, and a simple framework to choose.

Every DTC brand needs a customer portal that reduces friction and boosts retention. But Shopify’s landscape is fragmented: native Customer Accounts, app-based portals, or fully custom builds each come with trade-offs.

In our latest article, we break down the options and help you choose a path that fits your model, resources, and growth stage.

  • Know your options: Shopify Customer Accounts + UI Extensions, app-provided portals (Recharge, loyalty, returns), or custom builds.

  • Weigh the trade-offs: Speed and low maintenance vs. cohesive UX, control, and long-term flexibility.

  • Choose with retention in mind: If subscriptions or ongoing education drive LTV, your portal is your growth engine, not a commodity.

Brands that treat the customer portal as part of their retention strategy create cohesive, self-serve experiences that lower support load and reduce churn.

⚠️ Urgent: Shopify to restrict PII in web pixels soon. Shopify will enforce protected customer data scopes for all web pixel extensions beginning December 10th, 2025. If an app isn’t approved for the relevant protected scopes, PII fields (email, name, phone, address) in pixel payloads will return null. Non-PII events continue to fire, but conversion tracking, audience building, and attribution that rely on PII could silently break, right in peak season. Get ready to update the permissions of some third-party apps in the next days.
